Isle of Skye
Marie Cameron welcomes you to”Taigh an t-Sithein” Holiday Bungalow in
the crofting Community of Braes.
Taigh an t-Shein is the Gaelic for the house on the fairy knoll.
This comfortable Bungalow with oil fired central heating, (which we
hope you will not need!!!) Electricity and heating are included in
price, sleeps six in three bedrooms, one double room, one twin room
and one room with bunk beds.
Duvets, pillows, and bed linen are provided.
Towels are not provided.
A high chair and cot with mattress are available on request but bed
linen for the cot must be supplied.
The large kitchen is fitted with electric cooker, microwave, fridge,
freezer, toaster, kettle and automatic washing machine.
The comfortably furnished lounge has a colour television and DVD.
There is also a sun lounge/dining area at the south end of the house.
The bathroom has a shower fitted over the bath. There is a large
enclosed garden where children can play in complete safety and ample
parking space in the driveway. There are superb views across the sea
to the island of Raasay, beautiful walks on the hill side and five
minute walk to a sandy beach.
This is an excellent base from which to explore Skye, being only
seven miles from Portree, the capital of the Island, which offers the
benefits of a small town with a tourist information office, Heritage
centre with Sea eagle exhib-
ition and many other attractions. Portree is a small fishing port from
where you can take a boat trip to the shores of the nearby islands of
Raasay and Rhona, and view the wild life including the Sea Eagles or
do a spot of sea angling.
The district of Braes lies to the south of Portree, and is made up of
nine crofting townships. At Balmeanach a spit of land reaches into the
narrows of Raasay. This is an area rich in wildlife, geology and
history. Within view of the house is where in 1882 The “Battle of the
Braes” took place resulting in laws being formed giving the people
crofters rights for the very first time. Walking along the shore line
will find niches where the fishermen kept their boats over the
centuries. Looking out to sea it is possible to sight porpoise,
dolphins, whales, basking sharks, otters plus lots of sea birds
including Sea Eagles soaring overhead.
North Skye is full of interesting places to visit. Castles and
Museums, Galleries and Potteries, Exhibitions and Craft Markets, Pony
trekking is very popular for the children and the not so young. There
are also water sports such as Canoeing, Shore Fishing and Fresh water
angling for Brown Trout and Salmon.
Unlimited scope exists for hill walking or rock climbing in the
Cuillin Hills where the spectacular views are second to none. All of
this and more is within easy access of “Taigh an t-Sithein”
Gedintailor, Braes and when it comes to dining out you will be spoilt
for choice with many fine Hotels and Restaurants, offering the very
best in Highland Fare and local produce, perhaps washed down with a
‘wee dram’ produced by Talisker, the island’s own whisky distillery.
